For those who don't know me, I am Retired Marine and i am well aware that there were two flag raising's. For those who don't know the version that is most common is the one that I posted, Joe Rosenthal's photographed one. It happened on Feb 23rd 1945. Just 4 days after the initial landing Feb 19th 1945. There was still another month of hard fighting before the island was secured.

It's important to remember Rosenthal took this photo at the beginning of the battle, not the end, and that one hell of a fight ensued. And there are two versions of the photo because the size of the flag counted for something in a photo that would communicate hope to the American people. It's about taking heart and keeping it.
